Item Code: 172-5425

This weapon is a Civil War Model 1863 Sharps carbine made by the Sharps Rifle Manufacturing Company of Hartford, Connecticut. Carbine is a straight-breech, .52 caliber percussion, single shot breechloader fitted with iron furniture. Carbine serial # C28704 is located on the receiver tang. Overall the firearm measures 39” long and features a 22” long round barrel mated to a two-piece black walnut stock.

Barrel surface is bright with light scattered spots of oxidation. It is stamped with a weak “NEW MODEL 1863” behind the rear sight and a very good maker’s three-line address just forward of it. The sight itself is missing the flip-up leaf but does have faint patent marks on its base. Brass blade front sight is worn down. Bore has very good rifling with light surface dirt. Left flat at breech bears a faint “E.P.H.” mark.

Lock plate, receiver and hammer have no case colors remaining. Lock face has scattered moderate surface pitting but strong maker and patent stampings back of the hammer and on the left side above the sling bar. Screws show light wear. Mechanics of the weapon are good. Original nipple is present and mostly clean. Top of breech block shows some light pitting.

Forend stock is tightly secured to the barrel with an iron band that has been heavily cleaned. Wood of the forend is excellent with some original feathering present. Buttstock matches the forend in color but shows moderate wear from use and age with numerous small scratches, dings and dents. There is also a small amount of wood loss around the back of the lock. The saddle bar and ring are present. The bar is pitted some and there is one visible cartouche in the wood below it. Left side of the butt shows some definite saddle wear indicating that this weapon spent time on campaign.  [ad]
