Item Code: 172-5571

This early Sharps Model 1853 Slanting Breech carbine remains in good condition. The gun shows moderate use, but is complete and solid.

The gun is marked on the lock plate, to the rear of the hammer: “SHARP’S / PATENT / 1852”. This is the earlier patent marking, with the apostrophe in the word “Sharp’s”. The tang of the carbine is marked, “SHARPS / PATENT / 1848” along with the serial number 14296. The action of the carbine functions perfectly, and the mechanics remain strong. The Lawrence Pellet Primer System appears to be complete and functional as well.

The round barrel has a smooth surface with just lightest scattered pitting overall. The top of the barrel is marked, “SHARP’S RIFLE / MANUFG. CO. / HARTFORD CONN.” There is a brass blade sight at the muzzle and a complete flip-up sight near the breech. Bore is bright with strong rifling. Some scattered oxidation in the grooves.

The gun metal is dark gray overall. The screw heads are all in good condition. The original long pattern military style sling bar and ring are present opposite the lock and terminates on the left side of the barrel band.

The brass barrel band and the patch-box have a mellow patina, which is very attractive.

The stock of the carbine is in good shape with breaks or cracks. Both the buttstock and fore stock show the expected array of scattered bumps, dings and saddle wear that are accumulated in military service. A single, well-worn cartouche oval remains visible behind the receiver on the left side.

This is a fine example of a fairly scarce and very collectible early Sharps carbine.  [jet]
