Very nice condition wooden crate meas. approx. 16.75 inches long x 13.50 inches wide x 7.25 inches tall. Crate is nailed and is still very solid. The outside surface is painted an olive drab and only shows wear around the edges. The wood composing the body of the crate is in very good condition with no visible cracks. Each end has an attached wooden handle that runs from edge to edge. One handle shows very light wear while the other has moderate wear and some small amount of wood loss from being used. Both ends are stenciled above the handles “CARTRIDGES” in white 0.50 inch letters. Below the handle is stenciled “AUSTRIAN 54/100” Stenciling on both ends is a little light but readable.

The lid is complete. It has a crack running horizontally across its length. It was in two pieces but has been repaired. The lid has the same paint as the body, with the same amount of wear around the edges and screw holes. Stenciled very boldly on the underside of the lid is “COLUMBUS OHIO, JAN. 1863.” This stenciling is done in black letters 0.75 of an inch in height. Inside the crate is one of the original lid screws. This item is from the collection of author Dean Thomas.
