This type capper was often found in pre-Civil War and wartime era cased pistol sets. This particular example is made of German silver and has an unscrewable top allowing the interior to be loaded with pistol caps. The piece is spring loaded and will feed another cap into position when one is removed. The spring on this one still operates properly.
The side of this piece is stamped “J.S. IMPROVED” in two lines. The silver has some light surface dirt from age and storage but is in otherwise excellent condition.
