Used in the Gallager carbine, this ammunition specimen is a very good original condition .50 caliber combustible paper cartridge. The artifact has the conical bullet attached to a cartridge case made of light brown paper that would be completely consumed by the powder charge explosion when fired. Cartridge did not need to be opened to expose the powder that was ignited by the spark from a regular percussion cap. The .50 caliber conical bullet and its accompanying powder charge are complete, and wrapped in the original paper case. Exposed lead bullet is slightly loose but the cartridge wrap is tight and intact with no rips or tears evident but the paper does suffer from surface grime. Hand written on the paper’s side surface is “Gallagher / .50 cal.” This is example of a Gallagher combustible cartridge represents a very good specimen of Civil War carbine ammunition.
