Interesting 30-caliber ammunition crate originating from the FRANKFORD ARSENAL that had been forwarded to the SAN ANTONIO ARSENAL TEXAS. At a later date (May 18th 1904) this crate was invoiced and then again forwarded to the ADJUTANT GENERAL STATE OF ILLINOIS, SPRINGFIELD. ILL. From the date shown, this crate would have contained cartridges for the model 1898 Krag-Jorgensen rifle caliber .30-40. Also noted are the faintly stenciled words on both sides, CARTRIDGES CAL 30. FRANKFORD ARSENAL. Along with four remaining curricular printed paper label seals marked: FRANKFORD ARSENAL U.S one located on each of the sides and two on the bottom of the crate. Another feature that is located on the end boards above the handles is the date (Stamped into the wood) 5-24-1902. This would certainly indicate the original packing date at Frankfort.

Unlike earlier ammunition crates, such as that of the Civil War period, which used iron wood screws with single slotted heads, the lid of this crate was held on by using eight machine threaded iron bolts and wing-nut type closures, of which three are still included. This crate measures: 18”in length by 13”width and 7 3/4” height.

The entire stenciled top reads: U.S. NO. 239

W.T.  81 LBS.
