Item Code: 853-02

1864 dated shipping crate for Colt Navy cartridges. Crate is made of five pieces of wood and is missing only the lid. Outside measurements are 13 1/8 inches long x 5 5/8 inches wide x 4.00 inches high. Side pieces are notched to receive end boards which are then nailed. The sideboards making up the box are thick, approx. 1.00 inch wide while the end boards are about ¾ of an inch wide.

One side of the crate is marked “600 BALL CART,G / COLTS NAVY / BELT. PISTOL 1864” while the opposite side is marked “FROM / WATERVLIET / ARSENAL.” The upper half of the word “FROM” was on the lid and is missing. One of the end pieces is also marked but due to fading is difficult to read but it appears to be “NO. 19.”

One of the end boards is chipped with the top ¾ of an inch missing. The top edge of the sideboards show marks of the lid having been screwed on.

This is a rare box and the first one we have seen.
