Regulation tan paper cartridge used in the U.S. .54 caliber rifles and .55 caliber Austrian rifles. This is the typical "minie ball" style of cartridge used in the American Civil War. Known as the "regulation" or "American military" style of cartridge, i.e., powder charge and bullet wrapped completely in paper, tied over the nose of the bullet, with the powder end being closed with folds which formed a tail. Mint condition…this specimen is tied with black thread. Many years ago these cartridges were found within a St. Louis Arsenal ammunition crate.
