This is a complete package of .58 caliber cartridges for rifle muskets as manufactured by Johnston & Dow under their own patent. Package consists of a cardboard box wrapped in a pre-printed paper label. The package still contains 10 J&D musket cartridges and a roll of percussion caps. The label is printed quite clearly and can easily be read. At some point the tear-string was pulled and two edges of the box top are open. This has done no damage to the printed label and has offered the benefit of allowing a narrow view of the cartridge inside. There is some very minor smudging on the paper, most likely from too many dirty fingers handling the piece. A good solid box and overall, in very nice condition.

This type of cartridge is quite often referred to as a “skin” cartridge in error by collectors. Johnston & Dow received patents #33,393, #34,061, and #35,687 dated October 1, 1861, January 7, and June 24, 1862, for their “combustible cartridges.” They used paper or fabric that was impregnated with chemicals to make combustible powder cases. The cartridge case was then pasted to the bullet and coated with collodion to make them waterproof.  [jet]
