CONFEDERATE RICHMOND RIFLE MUSKET COMBINATION TOOL

$875.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 1000-1195

This Confederate gun tool has underlying bright metal mixed with dark gray and some surface rust. These are forged iron, varying slightly in dimensions, but were made in Richmond, and combine a double-ended screwdriver blade with a nipple wrench. See Paul Davies, “CS Armory Richmond” for some examples. This one is 3.5 inches tall. One tip of the blade has broken off on this example, but the other is intact. The tool was cleverly designed for the screwdriver blade to pivot and also act as the T-shaped grip for the wrench, giving the soldier greater torque in unscrewing and replacing a battered or broken nipple from his musket or rifle vent, something that could be a matter of life and death in battle. The open square of the wrench would fit over the square base of the nipple. This is a scarce example in good condition of a key Confederate gun tool carried in the field.   [sr]
