This is a tinned cartridge case for the pre-Civil War version of the Morse carbine. These were made at the Springfield Armory for trials of George Morse’s new carbine. Unfortunately, the Civil War broke out and halted further development…in the North. Morse sided with the South and eventually made .50 caliber carbines (and cartridges) for the State of South Carolina at Greenville.
Offered here is a reloadable case for the pre-war, .54 caliber carbine. The case is tinned and featured a rim around the base and the internal wire anvil. To reload, a regular percussion cap was placed on the anvil, the base closed with a rubber gasket, filled with powder, and a bullet seated in the open end.
Morse carbines, cartridges, and bullets are all very scarce and highly collectible. [jet]
