Item Code: 30-2181

A very good example of the small flask for the early .28 caliber Colt Root revolvers, also known as the Model 1855 Sidehammer Pocket Revolvers. This flask measures just three inches in the body, about four inches counting the spout. On each side it has the classic American eagle holding a U.S. shield across its body and clutching an olive branch and arrows. The rays of a sunburst rise in an arc between its wing tips and thirteen stars curve up the sides and overhead. Underneath is a crossed pair of revolvers, as seen on many of the larger flasks. The brown lacquer finish is at least 90 percent there with just a little wear to bright on the high points. The collar, spout and thumbpiece have a nice mellow patina. The thumbpiece is functional, but shows a crude, solder-repaired pivot. The coil spring is also an old, crude replacement, as is the spring screw. These small flasks without a Colt patent marking or an “E Pluribus Unum” ribbon are sometimes thought to be for a Remington, but are noted by Sweeney as appearing in the 1864 catalog of the American Flask Co. as, “1 oz. medium – Colts.”  [sr]
