VERY NICE PEACOCK POWDER FLASK ASSOCIATED WITH COLT ROOT REVOLVERS

$850.00

Item Code: 30-2209

This flask is French made and often found cased with Colt 1855 New Model Root Revolvers, likely being purchased from the maker by one of Colt’s larger dealers for use in his cased Colts. (See Rapley, Colt Percussion Accoutrements, p. 305 and 310. It is important to remember that probably 90 percent of cases and flasks for Colts were not actually purchased from Colt.) This is an elegant flask, about 4 inches tall, and features a flaring bottom with foliate scrolls in relief around the lower edge. The central depressed panel on either side has a tall vine-entwined column in relief with a peacock standing on top, two crossed pistols appear over the peacock, and a pair of birds facing one another as in a heraldic crest at top.

The flask is undented and has a nice mellow patina to the brass cap and charger, with just a little wear, very nice blue on the spring and lots of deep luscious brown lacquer on the body that is just thinning slightly on the sides from handling. Measures 5” in length including brass cap, and 2 1/8” wide at the widest point. This is a very Victorian looking flask that could go with a number of revolvers of the period, but has special associations with Colt Roots.  [sr]
