Wooden crate meas. approx. 15.50 inches long x 12.50 wide x 8.75 inches high. Crate is nailed together and is still very strong. Each end piece has incised handles. The outside surfaces have been painted brown and stenciled with red lettering. There is some light wear to the box, especially in the corners and edges. One corner is chipped. This chip meas. approx. 1.25 inches long x 0.75 of an inch wide. End panels are marked “1000 POULTNEY’S METALLIC CARTRIDGE, PATENTED DEC. 15, 1863, WITH CAPS FOR, SMITH’S BREECH LOADING CARBINE, No.1. 50-100 CALIBER.” One side panel is stenciled “FROM B. C. ENGLISH, CARTRIDGE MANUFACTURER, CENTRAL STREET, SPRINGFIELD, MASS.” The other is blank. The stenciled side panel has some sky blue paint lightly scattered across it. Apparently another box rubbed against this crate and left some paint behind. All stenciling is faint but very readable.  Four original lid screws remain along with 1/3 of the lid. This piece is stenciled in one corner “U.S. No.” Crate is very strong and in very good condition. From the collection of Dean Thomas.
