This early specimen Colt sidearm is a .36 caliber Colt Model 1862 Police revolver. Considered by many gun collectors to be the pinnacle of the Colt’s factory streamlined revolver design, this five-shot cap and ball weapon has matching serial numbers of # 583 indicating its likely production in the first quarter of 1861. Its rebated, half-fluted cylinder, along with the round barrel, frame, triggerguard and butt plate have all been cleaned and now wears a mix of dark gray and patina. Cylinder has light to moderate pitting, as does the barrel. All safety pins hammered down. Cylinder is matched with a 5½” long barrel and a creeper-style loading lever. A clear and sharp “ADDRESS SAML COLT HARTFORD CT” marks the top of the barrel. The standard “COLTS / PATENT” is stamped on the left side of the frame. Revolver mechanics rough. Grips are of one-piece, varnished walnut, strong and tight and exhibit slight shrinkage and some scuffing. Most original varnish is retained on the grips. Iron grip straps and triggerguard show no trace of any silver-plated wash. A small inspector stamping “G” shows on the triggerguard. Frame screws are good and not buggered up. This original Police Revolver is a sound specimen of a desirable Colt percussion firearm at a reasonable price. A nice addition to any sidearm collection or personal display.
