Item Code: 769-01

This .31 Model 1849 Colt Pocket revolver with 6-shot cylinder has a matching serial number of 192883 which places its manufacture in late 1861. It has a 4.00 inch octagon barrel that has very little bluing left on its surface. There is a trace of it on the bottom of the barrel underneath the loading lever and around the base of the loading lever catch. The rest of the barrel has a natural metal gray finish with light mottling. The top of the barrel has a strong stamping that reads "ADDRESS COL. SAML. COLT NEW YORK U.S. AMERICA."  The frame, cylinder and loading lever all match the barrel in color and condition. About 75% - 80% of the cylinder scene remains however there is some pitting and wear to the cylinder surface. The pitting is light and scattered while the wear consists of a rub line around the cylinder edge. The silver finish has worn off the trigger guard and grip strap exposing the brass underneath. The bottom of the grip strap has engraved initials of "J. J. S." The wood grips show light wear from rubbing along the edges. Action is sloppy. Sometimes it indexes properly and other times it does not. It will hold at half-cock and fall properly upon squeezing the trigger. The bore is fair and can use a good cleaning.

Attached to the revolver is a modern label that reads "COLT POCKET 1849-SER. #192883 MFG 1861. THIS REVOLVER IS INITIALED ON THE BUTT, SUPPOSEDLY THIS PISTOL WAS CARRIED BY A CSA SOLDIER WITH A TEXAS CAVALRY UNIT." Nothing more is known about the history of this weapon.
