Smith and Wesson produced about 117,000 revolvers between 1860 and 1868. The revolver is a 22 short rimfire caliber. The blued cylinder is a seven shot with a 3 3/16 inch blued octagon barrel. The brass frame is silver plated or nickel. The barrel is marked SMITH & WESSON, SPRINGFIELD, MASS and the cylinder was marked with 1855, 1859 and 1860 patent dates.

The revolver offered for purchase is serial number 31948. Barrel has very light traces of original bluing. Barrel markings are crisp but the cylinder markings are present but faint. Brass frame has 75$ or more of the original silver plating. Rosewood grips are original with traces of original lacquer. Bore has good rifling with minor pitting. Good working action.

Back strap is engraved “Jno McAdams / Jan. 1863”. Quick search of the online Civil War data base lists 38 individuals named John McAdams.
