This Model 1849 Pocket Colt is .31 with a four inch octagon barrel and a five-shot cylinder. The matching serial number of 182994 indicates a production year of 1860.
None of the original bluing remains and the case colors on the frame, hammer and loading lever have been reduced to hints here and there. The silver plating has also worn off the grip frame revealing the brass underneath.
The barrel has a number of small dings scattered along its length. The top of the barrel is stamped “ADDRESS SAML. COLT-HARTFORD CT.” in two lines. Stamping is readable but weak at center. The cylinder retains approx. 40% of the scene and a weak but readable serial number. Front edge of cylinder shows wear as does stops. The left side of the frame is marked “COLT’S PATENT” but it is slightly weak on the front end of the stamping. There is no military cartouche on the grips. All four serial numbers stamped on the bottom are strong and readable.
The action is a little stiff. Hammer holds at half cock and cylinder will spin with encouragement but not free and easy. Weapon indexes properly. Hammer falls properly. All nipples on the cylinder look to be original. Nipples have a slight build- up of crud around bases. Grips show light wear on sides but bottoms show signs of heavier use with numerous small scratches. All screw heads but one show wear. Loading lever operates properly and catch holds it in place.
This weapon is complete, has the proper markings and operates but it is not the prettiest Colt out there. It really does look to have been used.
