Presented here is a classic Colt cap and ball revolver commonly referred to as the 1849 Pocket Model. This personal sidearm, in very good original condition throughout, features a 5” long, octagonal barrel matched to a .31 caliber, six-shot cylinder that retains a strong, roll pressed design featuring the ‘stagecoach holdup’ scene, which retains 80% to 90% of the scene with light wear. All serial numbers (#215429) match save the wedge. Number indicates a production time of the 3^rd or 4^th quarter of 1862. A clear and sharp “ADDRESS COL SAML COLT NEW-YORK U S AMERICA” is stamped on the top facet of the barrel. The standard “COLTS / PATENT” is stamped on the left side of the frame but the word ‘PATENT’ is worn away. Screws are not buggered up and appear to be all original.

Frame and hammer have lost the original casehardening over the years. Barrel retains traces of the original bluing. Gunmetal exhibits areas of light pitting but overall, the sidearm has acquired a pleasing, dusky gray patina overall. Revolver is mechanically crisp with a strong action. Grips are of varnished, one-piece, walnut in good condition. Strong and tight, grips bear no chipping but does show two small dents on the right grip. Back strap and the trigger guard are brass. No trace of original silver-plated wash remaining on the triggerguard.

Known as the successor to the Baby Dragoon, the Model 1849 Pocket was a small version of the Model 1851 Navy revolver and proved ever popular through its end of production in 1873.
