THIRD MODEL COLT 1851 ‘NAVY’ REVOLVER

$1,100.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 362-608

Presented here is a pre-wartime specimen of an original Colt 1851 Navy Model Revolver in good overall condition. One of the most popular pistols ever produced by Samuel Colt’s firm in Hartford, Connecticut was Colt’s Navy model, a premier medium caliber handgun. Colt designated the term ‘Navy’ to imply the caliber (.36) of the weapon, as he did with its later and heavier companion the Colt Model 1860 Army of .44 caliber.

Manufactured in the 2nd / 3rd quarter of 1862, this complete and hard-used Model 1851 Navy revolver bears serial number #128396/s. As a six-shot, .36 caliber, cap and ball percussion revolver, this specimen was one of over 215,000 such sidearm made. Revolver features an un-rebated cylinder mated to a 7½” long octagonal barrel. Barrel edges are worn down as is the muzzle rim. Sidearm has matching serial numbers including the cylinder, loading lever and the wedge. Revolver exhibits weak mechanics. The engraved scene of the naval engagement between the Republic of Texas Navy and the Mexican Navy on the cylinder is heavily worn with just traces remaining. All six original nipples are in intact. Cylinder safety pins all hammered down.

Cylinder exhibits a dark gray surface with areas of dark rust pitting and oxidation. No original colors remain on the three-screw frame which features a clear “COLTS / PATENT” stamping on the left side. Some frame screws are replacements. Octagonal barrel with attached loading lever exhibits no traces of the original bluing and instead wears a dark mottled surface with minor oxidation. Barrel address marking “ADDRESS SAM’L COLT NEW-YORK CITY” is strong and clear. All surface metal wears a semi-dusky gray sheen. Walnut grips show just slight traces of varnish and are in good overall condition with no cartouches. No silver wash on the small rounded brass trigger guard. Brass back strap.
