Here is a Colt cap and ball percussion sidearm referred to as a Model 1860 Army revolver. In very good overall condition, this wartime, .44 caliber smoke wagon comes with its modified leather military flap holster. In production from 1860 through 1873, these Colt martial revolvers were the successor to the Colt Third Model Dragoon pistols. The Colt Army was the major sidearm in use by U.S. troops during the Civil War with over 127,000 revolvers acquired by the Union government during the conflict.

Government-inspected, this .44 caliber, three-screw handgun has a 6-shot rebated cylinder, an 8” long barrel, and original one-piece walnut grips. Specimen exhibits two government inspector’s cartouches, one on each side at the base. The unvarnished grips have no cracks or chipping. All gunmetal exhibits a mottled, dusky gray finish with scattered areas of dark oxidation and light pitting overall. No original case colors or bluing remain on the sidearm. Revolver has matching serial numbers #57855 on the barrel, frame, trigger guard, butt strap, wedge, and cylinder. Serial # dates the manufacture to the 2rd or 3rd quarter of 1862. Revolver is equipped with recoil shield cutouts on the frame and a small notch on the butt plate. Mechanics very strong and crisp. Barrel address reads “ADDRESS COL. SAML COLT NEW YORK U.S. AMERICA”. Cylinder scene visible but on the thin side. “COLTS / PATENT” mark on the left side of the frame has light rust pitting, but is visible. All nipples not broken. Three safeties are intact while three are hammered down. Major components show sub-inspector stampings. Original frame screws are in very good condition. No buggering.

Accompanying Colt military flap holster is of black leather and is a veteran item. Holster easily accepts this Army .44 Colt revolver. Flap closure tab has broken off with just remnants riveted to the flap. Entire body seam has been re-sewn in the field with light colored twine from the holster lip down to the muzzle tip. No plug. Brass ball finial is tight to the upper body. Upper holster body leather appears to have been reused from another type of holster (?). Overall, a tight rig with the large belt loop stitched on. Mild surface crazing. No maker markings are visible.

A veteran, nice early war production Colt Model 1860 Army revolver with its original leather holster from the Civil War.
