Item Code: 813-01

Presented here is a pre-war specimen of an original Colt 1851 Navy Model Revolver very good condition. One of the most popular pistols ever produced by Samuel Colt and his Hartford, Connecticut firm was his ’51 Navy model, a premier medium caliber handgun. Colt designated the term ‘Navy’ to imply the caliber (.36) as he did with its later and heavier companion, the Colt Model 1860 Army of .44 caliber.

Manufactured sometime in the 2nd / 3rd quarter of 1856, this complete and matching Model 1851 Navy sidearm bears serial number #57471. As a six-shot, cap and ball percussion specimen, this revolver was one of over 215,000 made. Revolver features an un-rebated cylinder mated to a 7½” long octagonal barrel. Barrel edges show average wear. Sidearm has all matching serial numbers including the spline, loading lever, and wedge. Revolver exhibits strong mechanics. The engraved scene of the naval engagement between the Republic of Texas Navy and the Mexican Navy on the cylinder is weak but still visible overall. All six original nipples are in intact. Cylinder safety pins all hammered down.

All gunmetal, including the frame, barrel, and triggerguard, has been cleaned and exhibit a dull, light gray, pleasing sheen overall. No original bluing or case colors. Cylinder exhibits a light gray surface with areas of light rust pitting. Three-screw frame retains all original screws (one very lightly buggered).  A thin but clear “COLTS / PATENT” stamping seen on the left side.  Barrel top flat address marking “ADDRESS SAM’L COLT NEW-YORK CITY” is strong and clear. Walnut grips maintain just traces of original varnish. Both are in excellent overall condition with no cartouches or blemishes. Some original silver wash still on the small rounded brass trigger guard.  A very good example of the popular model Colt 1851 cap and ball revolver.
