THIRD MODEL COLT 1851 ‘NAVY’ REVOLVER

$995.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 637-155

One of the most popular pistols ever produced by Samuel Colt’s firm in Hartford, Connecticut was Colt’s 1851 Navy model, a premier medium caliber handgun. Colt designated the term ‘Navy’ to imply the caliber (.36) of the weapon, as he did with its later and heavier companion the Colt Model 1860 Army of .44 caliber.

Manufactured in the 4th quarter of 1863, this complete and hard-used wartime Model 1851 Navy revolver bears serial number #166587. As a six-shot, .36 caliber, cap and ball percussion revolver, this specimen was one of over 215,000 such sidearm made. Revolver features an un-rebated cylinder mated to a 7½” long octagonal barrel. Barrel edges are worn down from use as is the muzzle rim. Sidearm has matching serial numbers save the wedge which is a replacement. Revolver exhibits good mechanics. The engraved scene of the naval engagement between the Republic of Texas Navy and the Mexican Navy on the cylinder is heavily worn away. Just faint traces remain of the serial #.

All six original nipples worn down. Cylinder safety pins all hammered down. Cylinder exhibits a dark gray surface with areas of dark rust pitting and oxidation. No original colors remain on the three-screw frame which features a clear “COLTS / PATENT” stamping on the left side. Some frame screws buggered. Some replaced. Barrel address marking “ADDRESS COL. SAM’L COLT NEW-YORK U.S. AMERICA” is strong and clear. All surface metal wears a dark gray sheen. Walnut grips show traces of varnish and are in good overall condition with no cartouches. No silver wash appears on the small rounded brass trigger guard. Brass back strap.
