This percussion handgun is a Civil War Remington New Model Army revolver in fair overall condition. These Remington sidearms were in production from 1863 to 1875 and the New Model Army became the strongest competitor against the Colt Model 1860 revolver during that time. The US government acquired a total of some 122,000 such New Model revolvers for military use.
This government inspected and marked sidearm is an original .44 caliber weapon with a 6-shot round cylinder matched to an 8” long octagonal barrel. Screw-on barrel shows threads visible at the breech end of the frame. Grips are original two-piece walnut in good condition with one government inspector cartouche visible on the left grip. The five-digit serial number 90694 stamped into the bottom facet of the barrel above the loading lever. Frame under the grips is numbered 93283. Darkened traces of original bluing seen on the barrel and frame. Has light pitting and an overall gray appearance. The cylinder rod has lost its ears and the frame has multiple dings on both sides in this area. Sidearm has its brass trigger guard, steel backstrap and the low hammer spur. Backstrap and base of grip frame have threaded holes showing that someone adapted this weapon for a shoulder stock. Plain unrebated cylinder wears a dusky light gray finish and shows wear and light pitting. Several sub-inspector stamps are found on major components. Original nipples intact. Barrel markings visible and read “PATENTED SEPT. 14, 1858 / E. REMINGTON & SONS, ILION, NEW YORK, U.S.A. / NEW MODEL”. Revolver mechanics are good. Bore could not be viewed due to damage to ears on cylinder rod.
This Remington New Model Army revolver is a well-used representative sidearm of the Civil War and later.
