THIRD MODEL COLT 1851 NAVY REVOLVER

$995.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: G3507

One of the most popular pistols ever produced by Samuel Colt’s firm in Hartford, Connecticut was Colt’s 1851 Navy model, a premier medium caliber handgun. Colt designated the term ‘Navy’ to imply the caliber (.36) of the weapon, as he did with its later and heavier companion the Colt Model 1860 Army of .44 caliber.

Manufactured in the 2nd quarter of 1856, this complete and hard-used wartime Model 1851 Navy revolver bears serial number #55976. As a six-shot, .36 caliber, percussion revolver, this specimen was one of over 215,000 such sidearm made. Revolver features an un-rebated cylinder mated to a 7½” long octagonal barrel. Barrel edges are worn down from use as is the muzzle rim. Sidearm has matching serial numbers save the wedge which is a period replacement and could not be removed to be checked for a number. Also, due to tight wedge the bore could not be observed. Revolver exhibits rough, stiff mechanics. Indexes properly and is tight at full-cock. Cylinder does not freely spin on half-cock. The engraved scene of the naval engagement between the Republic of Texas Navy and the Mexican Navy on the cylinder is 90% present.

All six original nipples original. Cylinder safety pins all hammered down. All metal surfaces exhibit a gray moderately mottled with scattered areas of light pitting and oxidation. Hints of blue on forward third of barrel. No case colors remain on frame. “COLTS / PATENT” stamping on the left side of frame is gone. Frame screws buggered and loading lever screw replaced by a pin. Loading lever has replaced tip and does not operate. Recoil shield edge has heavy wear. Barrel address marking “ADDRESS COL. SAM’L COLT NEW-YORK CITY” is strong and clear.

Walnut grips show traces of varnish and are in good overall condition with no cartouches.

No silver wash remains on the small rounded brass trigger guard. Backstrap showing all brass.
