SMITH & WESSON, NUMBER 2, .32 CALIBER “OLD ARMY” REVOLVER WITH HOLSTER

Item Code: 31-1545

The S&W No. 2 was a popular sidearm during the War Between the States and used the No. 2, .32 caliber rimfire cartridge. The Smith &Wesson, No. 2 was a single action, 6-shot revolver with a tip-up barrel. “SMITH & WESSON. SPRINGFIELD, MASS.” is stamped on the rib atop the 6-inch octagonal barrel. On the front face of the cylinder there is stamped “10” and around the cylinder, the typical stamping of “PATENTED APRIL 3. 1855, JULY 5.1859, & DEC 18.1860.” is faintly visible. The underside of the grip frame is marked with the serial number “11997”. The revolver is mounted with a fixed half-round blade front sight pressed into the rib and a notch in the cylinder stop leaf for a rear sight. The grips are smooth rosewood that has a deep, dark patina. There are no cracks in either grip and but one small chip out of the bottom, front corner on the left grip. The bore is bright and clean. The rifling is visible but very worn down. This revolver retains much of its Nickle finish but is covered overall with pinpricks and patchy dark spots. The action functions correctly. There is play at the hinge when the barrel is latched. Overall this is a good looking and very displayable revolver.

The leather holster is soft and pliable and is formed to the gun; they have been together for a long time. The holster features a flap without any closure device, a single 1.25”-wide belt loop, and a nose cap. Stitching down the body of the holster itself is tight and strong. The belt loop has been reinforced with two modern rivets at some point. The nose cap at the bottom is present but only half stitched in place. Like the gun, the holster is attractive and very displayable. A very nice pair.  [JET]
