ORIGINAL STARR DOUBLE ACTION MODEL 1858 PERCUSSION ARMY REVOLVER

$1,150.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 836-19

Manufactured by the Starr Arms Company of New York City, this percussion weapon is an original double-action Model 1858 Army revolver in good overall condition. These arms were in production from the late 1850’s through the early 1860s with a total of approx. 23,000 units made at the company’s Binghamton and Yonkers New York facilities.

This Starr revolver, features some of the original factory bluing. The barrel retains approx. 55%, while the frame has approx. 10% and the cylinder approx. 70%. Where blue is worn the metal surfaces are gray with some light to moderate scratches scattered throughout. There is also some light pitting on the loading lever and side of the barrel. Frame has heavy mottling and some light surface discolorations and light pitting.

Revolver also has numerous inspector marks on the barrel, frame and cylinder.   Patent date stampings on the frame are good and read “STARR ARMS CO. NEW YORK” and “STARR’S PATENT JAN.15, 1856”.

This weapon has a 6-shot unrebated cylinder with all original nipples present.  The round barrel is 6” long and is .44 caliber. The clearly stamped serial number of “8949” can be found on the cylinder. Grips are of one-piece walnut and in good condition with few dings and dents. The left grip has a faint military inspector’s cartouche at bottom. Both grips have period carved initials of “HW.” Sometime during the last 50 years someone named “JOE” felt compelled to carve his name into the bottom of the grips also. Frame screws are original and all but one are in good condition. Mechanics are strong but sloppy. Bore is very good with only some light surface dirt. Should clean up well.

This original Civil War Starr Double Action Model 1858 Army percussion revolver is a classic sidearm to add to any collection.   [ad]
