One of the most popular pistols ever produced by Samuel Colt’s firm in Hartford, Connecticut was Colt’s 1851 Navy model, a premier medium caliber handgun. Colt designated the term “Navy” to imply the caliber (.36) of the weapon, as he did with its later and heavier companion the Colt Model 1860 “Army” of .44 caliber.

Manufactured in mid-1860, this complete Model 1851 Navy revolver bears serial number #96668 and has been silver plated. As a six-shot, .36 caliber, cap and ball percussion revolver, this specimen was one of over 215,000 such sidearms made. Revolver features an un-rebated cylinder mated to a 7½” long octagonal barrel. Sidearm has deeply stamped, matching serial numbers on all parts. Revolver exhibits very strong mechanics. The engraved scene of the naval engagement between the Republic of Texas Navy and the Mexican Navy on the cylinder is mostly visible but appears to have been filled in somewhat by the plating. “COLTS PATENT No. 96668” and “ENGAGED 16 MAY 1843” are clearly visible.

All six original nipples are in good condition. Two of the six cylinder safety pins are flattened. The three-screw frame features a “COLTS / PATENT” stamping on the left side, where the upper halt of “COLTS” was not stamped very deep. All frame screws are in good shape with no buggered heads, save the wedge screw. Barrel address marking “ADDRESS SAM’L COLT, HARTFORD CT.” is strong and clear. Walnut grips retain varnish and are in good overall condition with no cartouches. All surface metal features a bright silver plating. Plating is in very good condition with only a few very minor scratches here and there. The brass trigger guard and back strap feature moderate wear to the silver wash.

This is a beautiful and very fine specimen of the Colt M-1851 Navy revolver with an 1860 production date!   [jet]
