NEAR MINT JAPANESE TYPE 14 SERVICE PISTOL AND HOLSTER WITH SPECIAL INSCRIPTION

$1,350.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: G3658

Principal Markings:  “20861” (serial number); character shachi (manufacturer); character sho and “19.3” (date of manufacture: “showa year 19.3” = March 1944); characters ju-yon-nen-shiki (model: “Year 14 Type”).

Manufacturer:  Nagoya Arsenal, Torimatsu Factory.

Condition:  Near mint condition with 98 percent of blue remaining; bore is exceptional; fully functioning; all matching serial numbers including the magazine (the spare magazine is one digit off “862,” so it was likely mixed up at the factory).

Notes: Standard Japanese 8mm service pistol of World War II.  The character shachi (kissing dolphins) is the symbol for Nagoya Army Arsenal.  The Torimatsu Factory made approximately 58,000 Type 14 pistols in 1944.  Includes original shoulder holster and spare magazine.  The holster is marked in gold kanji script:  事従 (an abbreviation of 支那事変従軍): “service in the Sino-Japanese War”; 記章: “war medal; decorated.”  The translation is “Decorated for distinguished service in the Sino-Japanese War.” Since the pistol was made in March 1944, this inscription likely denotes service in Operation Ichi-Go, the largest Japanese land campaign in World War II (April – December 1944) involving 17 divisions, 400,000 troops, and 800 tanks.    [sk]
