An original cap and ball percussion sidearm produced by the Whitney Firearms Company of New Haven, Connecticut, this sidearm is designated the Navy Second Model Revolver, 2nd Type. In excellent overall condition, this solid frame sidearm is a .36 caliber, three-screw model frame with a 6-shot unrebated cylinder mated to a 7½” long, octagonal barrel. A total of 33,000 of these handguns were produced from the late 1850’s through the early 1860s with over half the Second Models purchased by the government.

The back of the cylinder has six safety notches for the hammer, and retains traces of the original roll engraved scene of the ‘eagle, shield and lion’ motif. A solid frame revolver, it bears matching serial numbers of “3846” on the iron loading lever and also on the inside of the both grips. Two-piece varnished walnut grips are in good condition with a few minor scrapes.

No original finish remains on the iron frame, barrel, or hammer. All gunmetal now retains a smooth surface with dark light gray patina from old cleaning. Barrel address marking is the standard two-line block letter “E. WHITNEY / N. HAVEN”. Sidearm exhibits a brass trigger guard and an iron backstrap. Mechanics are excellent, tight and crisp. All frame screws are good.

This is a beautiful example of a Whitney .36 caliber revolver.   [jet]
