$9,800.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 490-1521

Presented here is a classic Colt cap and ball revolver commonly referred to as the 1849 Pocket Model. This personal sidearm, in good original condition overall, features a 5” long, octagonal barrel matched to a .31 caliber, six-shot cylinder that retains much of the roll pressed ‘stagecoach holdup’ scene. Original nipples. Safety pins are smashed down. All serial numbers (#204482) match, including wedge. Number indicates an 1862 date of manufacture. A clear “ADDRESS SAML COLT / HARTFORD CT.” is stamped on the top facet of the barrel. The standard “COLTS / PATENT” is lightly stamped on the left side of the frame. Screwheads are not buggered. This in one of 50 of this type revolver purchased by the U.S. Navy. The top of the barrel at the breech is stamped with an anchor; inspector’s stamp “P / GG” on cylinder; “UDC” (Union Defense Committee) stamped on butt strap.

Gunmetal exhibits an overall dark gray color with scattered light pitting. Some dings and scratches from age and use. Revolver is mechanically strong with good action, however cylinder spins roughly at halfcock. Grips are of varnished, one-piece, walnut in good condition. Strong and tight, grips bear no chipping but does show some light wear along butt edges. Back strap and the trigger guard are brass with a moderate amount of original silver-plated wash remaining, especially around trigger.

This rare revolver is accompanied by a small Japanned tin of “Eley Bros / London” pistol caps, small pistol powder flask, a brass two-cavity bullet mould (marked “Colt’s Patent”), folding cone & screw driver tool, and several loose bullets. All contained in an old handmade wood case. Constructed to resemble a “cased set”, a divider was added and the box was lined with maroon velvet. This material shows considerable wear and has been in the box for some time. The box looks nice enough but was definitely not made by a craftsman.

A scarce Navy purchase revolver (1 of 50) with all necessary appendages.   [jet]
