The Army model was a six shot, .44 caliber “self-cocking” percussion revolver with a 7 ½” octagonal barrel. Barrel with 6 grooves. Clearly marked on top of frame, “PETTENGILL / PATENT / 1856”, and on the bottom of the frame, “RAYMOND & ROBITAILLE / PATENTED 1858”. Double action hammerless type frame.

Manufactured for Pettengill by Rogers, Spencer and Company, Willowvale, NY in the early 1860’s. Serial number “3508” stamped on the bottom of the iron frame and matching number “3508” on the cylinder. This revolver retains sharp inspector’s marks in the metal with crisp “WW” on the barrel, cylinder and the frame. This mark is that of armory sub-inspector William Waters who worked from 1862 – 1864 inspecting Remington Arms, Model 1860 Spencer Carbines and Pettengill Revolvers.

Two piece walnut grips in perfect condition, no cracks or chips. Metal has a pleasing plum finish. All edges are sharp and crisp. All nipples original, mechanically perfect. All screws perfect. Very minor dings along one side of frame.

Overall an outstanding example of a Pettengill Army Revolver in very fine mechanical condition with a pleasing plum patina and sharp edges, with an outstanding walnut grip.  [ws]
