Here is an original Fourth Model version of the popular 1851 Colt Navy Revolver in very good overall condition. One of the most sought after models ever produced by Samuel Colt’s firm in Hartford, Connecticut was the Colt Navy pistol, a premier medium caliber handgun. Sam Colt designated the term ‘Navy’ to imply the caliber (.36) of the weapon, and later used the term ‘Army’ for its heavier .44 caliber companion, the Colt Model 1860 Army.

Manufactured sometime in mid-1863, this personal sidearm was likely used during the American Civil War. This M1851 Navy bears matching serial number #168860 marked on its components. With a .36 caliber, six-shot capacity cylinder, this cap and ball percussion specimen was one of the 215,000 Colt ‘Navy’ sidearms made through 1873.

The revolver features an octagonal 7½” long barrel with attached loading lever. Barrel shows minor dings and scratches from use but retains most of the original bluing. Bore is clear with sharp rifling. Multiple dings around wedge. Strong maker address that reads “ADDRESS COL. SAM’L COLT NEW-YORK U.S. AMERICA”. Mechanics are very tight with strong half cock and full cock positions. Crisp indexing. Cylinder bears the roll-engraved naval engagement scene between the Republic of Texas Navy and the Mexican Navy. Cylinder has light gray patina. There are traces of bluing between the cones. All cylinder pins are hammered as normally found and the six original nipples are strong, not chipped or broken. “COLTS PATENT” stamp on the left of frame is crisp and clear. Frame screws not buggered. The original, one-piece varnished walnut grips are in overall good condition but the right side has a couple dings and one narrow, ½” long chip at the butt. There are no military inspector cartouches. The brass furniture is all a nice golden color. “36 CAL” stamp on left side is crisp. Iron frame and cylinder show traces of case color, pitting, and slightest amount of surface rust.

A very good condition, highly sought after, war-time Colt Navy revolver.  [jet]
