MODEL 1860 COLT ARMY REVOLVER

$2,500.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 1030-271

A cap and ball percussion sidearm, this specimen is a complete Civil War Colt Model 1860 Army revolver in good original condition. In production from 1860 through 1873, these handguns were the successor to the Colt Third Model Dragoon pistols. The Model 1860 Army was the major sidearm in use by U.S. troops during the Civil War with over 127,000 Colt revolvers acquired by the Union government during the conflict.

This revolver is a .44 caliber, three-screw model with a 6-shot rebated cylinder and an 8” long barrel. All matching serial numbers (78459) on the barrel, frame, trigger guard, butt strap, cylinder, and even on the wedge. Serial number dates the manufacture in the latter part of 1862.

Sidearm is equipped with recoil shield cutouts on the frame and the small notch on the base of the butt plate. Mechanics are strong. Barrel address, “ADDRESS COL. SAML COLT NEW - YORK U.S. AMERICA” has light wear. Cylinder scene also has wear but is discernible. Patent date and serial number are visible. The “COLTS / PATENT” mark on the left side is light. One of the nipples is broken; other five are in fine condition. All cylinder safeties hammered down. Screw heads are in good condition.

Brass trigger guard shows no traces of silver plating. Patina on gunmetal is an overall pewter/gray color. Brass has a mellow golden patina.

Grips are original one-piece walnut in good condition. A worn cartouche remains on both sides and a narrow channel was carved out on the bottom to allow for a lanyard to be attached.

This is a classic, early war-time production “Colt Army” revolver.  [jet]
