J. AND F. GARRETT SINGLE SHOT PERCUSSION PISTOL

Item Code: 1030-274

Typically unmarked, these brass framed single shot pistols are attributed to J. and F. Garret of Greensboro, NC, makers of the Tarpley carbine. Serial numbers concealed on the backstrap by the grips run to a tad over 500, indicating a substantial production.  The serial number on this particular pistol is “180”. The pistols utilize barrels from the m1842 U.S. single shot pistol, including its characteristic swivel ramrod. Albaugh theorized the Garretts used parts cleared out of the Fayetteville Armory in 1861 to make way for the captured Harpers Ferry rifle machinery. Others theorize they were made slightly before the war or by an unknown maker, but the Garrett attribution has not been seriously challenged.

Ours bears a “JH” over “P” proof at the left breech, a familiar inspector on 1842 pattern pistols by Aston. The barrel is 8 ½ inches long and .54 caliber. Barrel and brass frame are in the bright. The brass frame and one-piece strap have minor handling dings, but are both very good. A small tang screw at top is missing. The barrel shows just scattered age spots and a few small pits at the breech near the nipple, which would be expected if the gun had been fired. The brass front sight is in place. The triggerguard shows slightly gray with some darker gray spots on the underside. The slightly bag-shaped grips appear original and in very good condition, fitting the backstrap and frame tightly. The mechanics are excellent.  [sr]
