This Colt is serial numbered 94038. The cylinder is numbered [-]3907. Chances are the cylinder came off pistol 93907, they were issued together to the same unit, and two soldiers cleaning their pistols over a campfire or in winter quarters inadvertently swapped cylinders, which were, after all, interchangeable.  The number gives it an 1863 date of manufacture; the condition matches; and, other than the borrowed cylinder, the gun rates excellent.

The metal is smooth with just a few tiny pinpoint dings on the cylinder and frame just in front of it. The barrel address, patent and other markings are crisp. The cylinder stamps are crisp as well, the nipples are not battered, and there is very visible cylinder scene. On the left the barrel shows thin blue from the muzzle back, which gets richer toward the loading assembly, arbor and cylinder. The right shows more of a mix with steel gray with some brown spotting. The loading assembly shows some thin case color, blue on the screw and latch, and the frame shows very distinct case color on the left, with a little less on the right, but still distinct case at rear, the capping groove and hammer. The brass has an even, medium tone. The backstrap shows smooth metal, blue lower down, and very distinct blue on the buttstrap, which also shows blue on the screwhead.

The grips are excellent, with a few handling scratches, but show a faint cartouche on the left and have a tight fit to the metal. The brass has an even, medium patina. The backstrap has good blue top and bottom, a little thin in the middle where the palm of the hand would grasp it, and the buttstrap shows very good blue, with blue on the screw head, and just a few dings on butt flat, one small nick at the right toe and two tiny checks to the edge of the buttstrap near the screw.

The 1860 Colt Army is the quintessential Civil War cavalry revolver. This one is in very nice condition and made early enough to have been in the major campaigns, starting in 1863, when the Union cavalry really came into its own.  [sr]
