MODEL 1842 “BOX LOCK” US NAVY PISTOL BY AMES

$1,200.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 482-449

Round smoothbore barrel is .54 caliber and measures 6” long. Bore is dark with light pitting. The exterior surface of the barrel is smooth with a brown tone. Little to no pitting. Breech is clearly marked: “USN / 1844 / RP / P”. Barrel is held to the stock by tang screw behind the breech and a single brass barrel band forward.

The lock, hammer, and bolster have a dirty gray color. The usual maker marks, “N. P. AMES / SPRINGFIELD / MASS” are no found although “USN / 1844” are clearly seen on the rear of the lock. Hammer / trigger mechanics are crisp and work well. Original nipple.

Trigger guard, round butt plate, and barrel band are brass with a light patina.

Stock is dark with numerous small dings and dents but is in overall good condition. Left flat of stock has two light inspector’s cartouches.

Iron button type ramrod is attached at the muzzle by a swivel and operates properly although needs a strong “pull” to get end out of the ramrod channel.

Ames manufactured approximately 2000 of these weapons between 1842 to 1847. [jet]
