Remington came to dominate the market for .44 caliber army revolvers starting in late 1863. This is a good example of a New Model Army, serial number 45720, made about November 1863 according to Ware’s table. The metal is smooth and the markings are clear. The barrel shows some thin plum color mixed with gray. The loading lever has some darker color near the latch and the head of the cylinder pin shows some thin blue. The front sight is the correct pinched screw-in sight. The barrel markings are clear and are the older Remington markings that preceded the addition of the words “new model” and reverted to using the Beals 1858 patent date but without Beals’ name. The cylinder and frame have a dusting of brown, but show more gray. The hammer shows muted case color. The two rear frame screws show a thin blue on the heads. The brass triggerguard has a medium patina. The backstrap is a thin brown mixed with gray.

The grips have a tight fit to the frame, back and butt strap. The bottom of the butt and right side show scattered small dings. The left side shows fewer marks, an evident inspector’s cartouche, and the head of the grip screw shows blue. The lower edges show minor wear to the finish, but no significant chips.

This is good example of a Remington Army revolver. When Colt fell out of favor with the Ordnance Department, Remington and Starr worked to pick up the slack, but it was Remington that came to dominate the field and become the typical cavalry trooper’s side arm. This would look great in a cavalry display.  [sr]
