Between 1860 and 1868, the Smith & Wesson arms company in Springfield, Massachusetts produced some 17,000 of these small arms for government and civilian use.

This weapon is .22 cal short rimfire handgun designated as the Model No. 1, 2nd issue and bears serial #102396 on the steel butt strap. Revolver is fitted with a seven-shot cylinder matched to a 3 3/16” long octagonal barrel. Revolver displays slight traces of original case colors in some areas. Most of the metal wears a mottled appearance. Does not appear to have been cleaned. Bore is pitted. Frame shows some brass under a silver finish. Some light pitting. Marking are readable.

Piece exhibits a tip-up barrel hinge break action. A good set of two-piece, varnished rosewood grips is featured with a flat butt shape profile. [AD]
