This is a nice Model 1851 Colt Navy revolver. It is a .36 caliber revolver with six-shot cylinder, a 7 ½” octagonal barrel with attached loading lever, and brass frame with round trigger guard. Serial numbers for this “Third” model began at 4200 and ended around number 85000. This specimen is serial number 79729 which was manufactured in mid-1857.

The top of the barrel is marked “ADDRESS SAML COLT HARTFORD CT” and the left side of the frame is marked “COLTS / PATENT / U.S.”  The cylinder features the much of the engraved cylinder scene of a battle between the Texas Navy and the Mexican Navy, and is also marked COLTS PATENT and the complete serial number. The grip straps are brass with no plating left. The original grips are one-piece walnut showing wear. Gun metal has a nice dark pewter patina with scattered dings and wear. Brass has an even, dull yellow patina.

Accompanying holster is constructed of black bridle leather. Flap sewn to holster. Closing tab is sewn and riveted to underside of flap and is unbroken.  Wide belt loop is also sewn and riveted. Leather shows heavy wear overall with moderate finish cracking and loss.

An original and complete martially marked model 1851 Colt revolver in good condition with a well-used holster.   [jet]
