This is a Model 1862 Colt Police revolver. This is a .36 caliber revolver with a five-shot rebated half fluted cylinder, a 6 ½” long round barrel with attached loading lever, and an iron frame with round trigger guard.

Serial numbers for this model began at 1 in 1861 and ended around 48,000 in 1873. This specimen has the low serial number of 872 which was manufactured in early 1861. Matching serial number is found on barrel, frame, cylinder, trigger guard, and back strap. The wedge is an old replacement which does not have a serial number.

The top of the barrel is marked “ADDRESS SAML COLT HARTFORD CT” and the left side of the frame is marked “COLTS / PATENT”. The cylinder is marked with serial number and “PAT SEPT 10TH 1850”.

The original grips are one piece varnished walnut in fine condition.

Mechanics operate well.  Gun metal is overall dark gray/brown. Iron trigger guard and back strap are clean with only trace remnants of silver plating.

An original and complete model 1862 Colt revolver.  [jet]
