COLT ARMY MANUFACTURED IN 1862 IN VERY GOOD CONDITION

Item Code: 648-12

This Colt Army Revolver rates very good for condition. There is some thin faded blue on the forcing cone and some faded case color on one side of the frame, but the metal is smooth, the markings are crisp, the serial numbers match, there is visible cylinder scene, the wood has a tight fit to the metal with nice finish, just a couple of dings on the flat of the butt, and it has a visible cartouches on the grips. The serial number is 68656, giving it an 1862 date of manufacture, making it liable for use in most of the great battles, cavalry fights and expeditions of the war.

The front sight is in place. The barrel and loading assembly are a mix of muted silver and pewter in color with a little thin blue-turned-plum brown. The barrel address is crisp. The cylinder has a few scratches, but crisp Colts patent markings and a visible naval battle scene.  The nipples are not battered down. The mechanics are good and the pistol indexes properly.

The right frame shows a mottled gray and pewter, with some darker gray spots. The left frame shows a clear Colts / Patent stamp on the left, good slots on the screw heads, and some thin case color above the trigger and around the screws. The triggerguard and strap are a medium brass. They fit the frame and the wood perfectly.

The grips are near excellent and fit the frame and backstrap perfectly as well. The oil finish is very good. There is a tiny lighter half circle at the bottom of the right grip, but this is color only. Otherwise just a few light handling marks. On the lower right grip appears the left-leaning script initial of “J.T.” of John Taylor within a rectangle with rounded ends. (Taylor was ordered to take over inspection at Colt 17 August 1861,  and by mid-1862 was in charge of inspections at Colt and at Starr. As senior subinspector his initials here appear on the right grip, the general rule at the final inspection.  The lower left grip shows a second inspector’s cartouche that is plainly visible, with less legible initials that are likely the “CSL” of Charles S. Leonard. The only defect to the grips is some dings on the buttflat and one small divot at left along the strap next to the screw, which looks like a very small surface chip. The strap itself shows thing faded blue, as does the screw head.

This is a very nice .44 caliber Colt Army revolver that was a standard side arm for U.S. cavalrymen in the Civil War. It was popular among soldiers and well sought after by collectors. The 1862 date of manufacture and very good condition makes it a great candidate for an early and mid-war cavalry display. It would look great laid out with a nice set of cavalry accouterments and good holster.  [sr]
