SMITH & WESSON .44 DOUBLE-ACTION FIRST MODEL: DOUBLE ACTION FRONTIER

$975.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 490-2237

The Double Action Frontier (or “New Model Navy”) was introduced in 1881 and shipped until 1913, but all frames had been manufactured prior to 1900. Production ran to 53,590. This one is serial numbered 50243 and is a good example of this hefty revolver chambered for the S&W .44 Russian and with a 6 ½ inch barrel. These were popular pistols in the American west and are associated with figures like Belle Starr and John Wesley Hardin.

The checkered hard rubber grips are excellent, brown in tone, with crisp checkering, diamond escutcheon at the screw with good edges, and the S&W monogram at the top of the grip, with no chips, cracks or damage. The frame is nickeled and shows a mix of silver and gray with areas of small gray spotting overall, but does not show ugly flaking, though the bottom of the back strap on the butt shows some fine pitting. The markings are sharp. The mechanics are good. The grips have a good fit. The fluted cylinder shows the characteristic double stops and “free grooves” between the inner set. The barrel address with patent dates is fully legible on the top, as is the “.44 S&W CTG.” on the left barrel. The cylinder number matches. The hammer shows some faded case. The latch shows some blue. This is a good example of a classic western revolver.  [SR]
