Item Code: 172-2910

Presented here is a classic Colt cap and ball pistol commonly referred to as the 1849 Pocket Model Revolver. This personal sidearm, in good original condition throughout, bears all matching serial numbers of # 188931 indicating a production year of 1861. Gunmetal has lost its original finish and casehardening over the years but the piece has acquired a pleasing, dusky gray patina overall. Revolver is mechanically superb with crisp, strong action. Grips are of varnished, one-piece, walnut that has been nicely hand-checkered. Strong and tight, they bear no trace of shrinkage or chipping. Grip straps and the oval trigger guard are brass with a light trace of original silver-plated wash remaining on the triggerguard.

This specimen features a standard 4” long barrel matched to a .31 caliber, five-shot cylinder that retains a strong, roll pressed design featuring the ‘stagecoach holdup’ scene, still clear and sharp. All serial numbers match. A clear and sharp “ADDRESS COL SAML COLT NEW-YORK U S AMERICA” marks the top of the barrel. The standard “COLTS / PATENT” is stamped on the left side of the frame but is thin. Screws are not buggered up and appear to be all original. Fitted black leather flap holster is in good condition and complete with its lead finial. Has neither belt loop nor a holster plug.

Called the successor to the Baby Dragoon, the Model 1849 Pocket was a small version of the Model 1851 Navy revolver and proved ever popular through its end of production in 1873.
