This full-size Spencer repeating, Springfield Armory conversion rifle musket is a Model 1865 and one of some 30,500 models altered from Spencer carbines between 1865 to 1874 and included the Stabler cutoff. In very good condition, this Spencer altered specimen exhibits a 32½” long Springfield barrel with a three-groove rifling for the .50 caliber carbine ammo, i.e. (56-50 Spencer) rimfire metallic cartridges. Barrel has acquired a pleasing plum-brown patina overall along with a few dings near the bands. Rifle is equipped with a low iron post front sight, an iron cleaning rod and not the high front blade sight nor the bayonet lug on the barrel underside. Barrel takes the Springfield angular bayo.

Carbine shoulder stock was lightly refinished and the single government cartouche is found on the left side. Has a new buttstock. Forend is new and was secured with two barrel bands. Top of receiver is stamped “MODEL 1865 SPENCER REPEATING RIFLE / PAT’D MARCH 6, 1860 / MANUF’D AT PROV., R .I. / BY BURNSIDE RIFLE CO.”. The rifle bears serial # 3508 on the left side of barrel and on the top of receiver. Serial number on barrel was stamped at Springfield Armory to match the original # on the receiver. Springfield applied the Stabler cut-off. All gunmetal was repaired and refinished. Rifle has no carbine bar and ring.

The Spencer conversion process terminated with the adoption of the Springfield ‘trap door’ class of longarm. This Spencer conversion by the Springfield Armory is a fine rifle at a great price.
