Item Code: 740-380

This longarm, sometimes referred to as the “Falling Block Rifle”, was one of some 1500 to 2000 total units produced by the Allen & Wheelock, Ethan Allen & Co, circa 1860 through 1870. The .42 caliber, rimfire longarm measures 42½” long overall and is fitted with a 26” round barrel with an octagonal 8” section at the receiver. Bore exhibits three strong lands and grooves and is slightly dusty but would clean to a shiny bright. Black walnut stock is a two-piece set and is secured to the barrel via two barrel screws. Stock is in very good plus condition with few normal dings and storage dents. Rifle is fitted with a simple take-down feature to separate the barrel from the frame with a tapered square-headed screw on the frame.

Brass receiver wears a dull brass patina and shows light oxidation with areas of wear. Hammer is a manual operation but the trigger guard acts as the lever to open the breech and eject the cartridge. Missing on the left side of rifle is its rear sight lever to manually elevate or lower the sight replaced in later manufactured units with a leaf-type sight. Unfortunately, the rear sight was applied directly over the barrel marking which read “ALLEN & WHEELOCK / ALLEN’S PAT. SEPT.18, 1860” Stamped on the brass triggerguard tang is the serial number # 1291. Swivels located at the single barrel band and on the underside of the stock.
