Pattern 1853 Enfield .577 inch Percussion Rifle Musket, Windsor Pattern, 1856. During the Crimean War (1854-1856) there was a shortfall of rifle muskets. An American contact was swiftly set up in February 1855 for 25,000 US rifle muskets, altered to the Enfield bore, to be made by Robbins and Lawrence of Windsor, Vermont. The American produced Enfield was stamped with 'WINDSOR' on the lock. Only 16,000 rifle muskets ended up being produced in the US for the British Army.

This particular musket is one that actually made it into British service for the Crimean War. It has an 1856-dated lockplate over “WINDSOR” and has a crown on the left side. The barrel has no markings except an eagle on top. The buttplate, trigger guard, nipple protector and nosecap are made from brass with regimental markings across the top of the buttplate which read "RSDM" with the quartermaster's inventory number "225". All other parts are iron and have a nice gunmetal gray patina. Tangent sight is marked with an “A” over a crown.  Bore is bright with good rifling and only minor pitting. The mechanics are excellent. Original walnut stock is in very good condition and is marked with a “5” over a crown near the trigger guard. The right side of the buttstock has two opposing broad arrows, which means this rifle was officially decommissioned from British military service.

Most of these “Windsor’ saw hard use and not many have survived in this condition.
