.69 caliber, percussion.  Lockplate markings are good: “eagle motif / US / SPRING / FIELD / 1849”.  Other markings: barrel date 1849 sharp; V / P / eagle head sharp; buttplate shows “US”;  walnut stock shows one thin cartouche on left side. Stock stamped with two sets of initials “D.A.B.” Stock shows mellow dark patina with minor dings from age and use. All metal nicely cleaned. Mechanics very strong. Overall good condition. A good representative Model 1842 Springfield smoothbore musket.
