Cal. 58 “Springfield” manufactured at the Springfield Armory. The lock surface is a bright polished patina. Markings “Eagle” with” U.S.” over SPRINGFIELD” and the date “1862”are sharp. Crisp working lock work. All other iron surfaces are also polished bright with areas of dark spots with pitting. Barrel markings are the date “1862”, and the VP/ eagle at the end of the barrel are crisp. The rear sight is complete and functional.  The ramrod is original.  Bore is excellent. The stock is light in color and has some nicks and gouges. The inspector’s cartouches located on the opposite side of the lockplate are excellent. The Model ‘61” Springfield was the standard musket in use during the Civil War with 265,129 manufactured. If you only have one Civil War firearm for your collection it should be a 61 or 62 dated Springfield.
