Cal. 58 “Springfield” produced by Springfield Armory. The lock surface and the hammer are case-hardened with markings “Eagle” with” U.S.” over SPRINGFIELD” and the date “1864”. Crisp working lock. All other iron surfaces are polished metal. The barrel markings are “VP” over “Eagle” and the date “1864” at the end of the barrel. The rear single leaf sight is complete and blued. The ramrod is original. Bore has excellent rifling and a very bright finish. The stock is a light patina, sharp edges and no nicks or scratches. The inspector’s cartouches located on the opposite side of the lockplate is ESA (E.S.Aillen) and WPJ are sharp and clear. Also sub-assembly inspector’s markings are a W on the trigger guard and an A L on the stock just beside the trigger guard. Front and middle barrel bands and barrel are stamped “A”.
The ‘63 model is the only Springfield that you will see with sub-assembly markings. To keep up with production Springfield had to purchase parts from other sources. The Model ‘63” Springfield had a total quantity of 255,040 produced. Springfield went back to the retaining springs on the barrel bands after receiving numerous complaints from the field. This model was the last U.S. martial regulation arm of muzzle-loading design.
